"Social Process Without Actors? The Conspiracy Theories and
the Quest for Enemies in the Central and Eastern Europe"

Topics: The conference will be focused on the phenomena of
victimization and the conspiracy theory. The former is deeply grounded in
East/Central European Countries, where as the latter comes from more distant
sources. The conference will provide a multi- and interdisciplinary framework
for the analysis of the above phenomenon. The organizers are mindful of the
variety of the newly emerging possibilities for the analysis of the human
involvement in it. They would like to promote a forum for innovative insight in
the field and would like to stress their initial openness for varying
perspectives on the main themes: the conspiracy theories and the analysis of the
quest for enemies; let alone the support for discussion and a devoted debate.
Conference fee: Registration fee is $75
Conference languages: English; Russian, Lithuanian and German may be
introduced as working languages depending on sufficient number of Conference
participants.
The conference ist expected to consist of four plenary sessions combined with
round-table discussions. The proceedings of this international Conference will
be published.

Mittelosteuropas unter Berücksichtigung von Erfahrungen aus dem deutschen
Einigungsprozeß

Ziel der Konferenz war es, die gegenwärtige Lage der Geistes- und
Sozialwissenschaften in ostmitteleuropäischen Ländern und dort vorhandene neue
Ansätze zu analysieren, Erfahrungen aus dem deutschen Einigungsprozeß
vorzutragen, sie auf ihre Gültigkeit für die Entwicklungen in Ostmitteleuropa
zu überprüfen und Empfehlungen zu erarbeiten, die für den Neuaufbau der
Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften in den ostmitteleuropäischen Ländern von
Bedeutung sind. Die rund 60 eingeladenen Teilnehmer aus Deutschland, den USA,
Polen, Ungarn, der Tschechischen Republik und der Slowakei erörterten die Lage
und die Zukunftsaussichten der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften nach der
politischen und wirtschaftlichen Wende in diesen Staaten.

Themes: The conference's major theme was Economic Participation and
the Transition.
Papers on all areas of worker's participation; self-management, and economic
and industrial democracy were presented from about 85 participants from 33
different countries of Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South
America. The main goals of the presentations were economic theory especially of
the transition, empirical evidence, institutional and historical studies,
experiences in Eastern and Central Europe, developed countries and developing
countries in the field of industrial democracy, self-management and
privatization. There was a interesting and controversial discussion of the
chances, challenges and problems of the employee ownership, profit-sharing and
economic democracy in economies in transition.

Euroseminar:
Ökonomische Transformation und Arbeitsbeziehungen - in der Textil- und
Bekleidungsindustrie - die Rolle des sozialen Dialogs in den Neuen Bundesländern
Zeit: 6. September 1996

Veranstalter: Institut für Wirtschafts- und Sozialforschung (im
Auftrag der Generaldirektion V (Beschäftigung, Arbeitsbeziehungen und soziale
Angelegenheiten) der Europäischen Gemeinschaften wurde das Seminar durchgeführt.
Themenschwerpunkte: Das Anliegen des Seminars war es, gültige europäische
Regelungen des sozialen Protokolls und deren Konsequenzen für die Gestaltung
nationaler und betrieblicher tarifvertraglicher Regelungen zu erläutern und
insbesondere deren Wirken im Transformationsprozeß in Ostdeutschland zu erörtern.
Gleichfalls wurden internationale Erfahrungen mit strukturellem Wandel
ausgetauscht und die anwesenden Vertreter der Europäischen Gemeinschaften mit
den unmittelbaren Problemen der Unternehmen dieser Branche und der
Textil-Regionen der neuen Bundesländer vertraut gemacht. Insbesonderre wurde
deren Relevanz für die mittel- und osteuropäischen Reformstaaten und den
strukturellen Wandel in der Branche erörtert. Deshalb nahmen neben
Wissenschaftlern auch Vertreter von Arbeitsgeber- und Arbeitnehmerorganisationen
und von Industrie- und Handelskammern aus der Tschechischen und der Slowakischen
Republik, aus Polen, Litauen, Ungarn, Bulgarien, Albanien, Rumänien sowie aus
der Russischen Föderation teil.
Die Seminarbeiträge werden publiziert und können ab Dezember 1996 zum Preis
von 25,- DM bezogen werden.
