Abstract
Global science and academia are new frontiers for women academics, providing both opportunities and severe challenges. In this talk - based on her new book, Women in Global Science: Advancing Academic Careers through International Collaboration (Stanford University Press, February 2017) - Zippel argues that global science and academia reconfigure gendered inequalities, creating “glass fences,” or gendered barriers of access. However, international research collaborations also provide opportunities for U.S. women scientists, because of the global status of U.S. science and academia. Women and other academics marginalized at home benefit from what she calls the “.edu bonus” based on “academic nationality.” The status of U.S. science becomes more salient than that of gender when work takes them abroad.
