Founding of the Osteuropa - Netzwerk (Eastern Europe Network)

Upon the initiative of the Social Science Information Centre at GESIS, the East-West Science Center at the University of Kassel (OWWZ) and the German Society for Research on Eastern Europe e.V. (DGO) almost 20 scientific institutions in Germany, Austria and Switzerland have come together to form an Eastern European Network to offer information on Eastern Europe over the internet. In two workshops in Berlin (December 4-5, 2000 and March 5, 2001) the representatives of these institutions agreed to establish an Eastern European portal (German site) on the internet.

The joint information service includes links collections with commentary and overviews of databases, categorized by country and type of information as well as discipline. The regional spectrum covers

• Eastern Central Europe
• South-Eastern Europe
• Baltic states
• CIS states
• Trans-Caucasus

The specialized information is structured by

• institutions
• facts
• media, the press, literature information,
• practice and service info,

and it contains mostly scientific information, augmented by information on politics, economics, culture and country studies. The goal of the information group is to offer potential users a current structured retrieval instrument based on agreed upon standards, that allows fast access to a comprehensive range of relevant internet sources on Eastern Europe.

At the same time the institutions participating in the Eastern Europe Network seek to critically examine their existing internet service on Eastern Europe regarding user-friendliness or overlap as well as filling in existing information gaps. 

The network is an informal association and the participants invite all interested information providers to join.
