Archiving services for data depositors for their own studies in the Zentralarchiv
The Zentralarchiv stores copies of computer-readable datasets from all disciplines of
the social sciences, if the studies:
- allow reports on the German population or a part thereof;
- were carried out by German researchers, whether or not the study relates to Germany;
- could be of general interest to social science users;
For all questions concerning the possibilities for the archiving of social science
data, please contact:

In all cases where data are archived, the following services and advantages are offered
by GESIS-ZA to the data depositor:
- Routine checking of data for completeness and processing
according to GESIS-ZA standards.
- Proper archiving of the data and regular care of the data carrier.
- The distribution of the data through the Zentralarchiv will be carried out according to
the wishes of the data depositor. Depositors set the access
categories for their data.
- The data depositor can at any time request a copy of the data deposited in the
Zentralarchiv free of cost.
- Cost-free usage of the Zentralarchiv data holdings up to the same volume as the data
deposited in the Zentralarchiv, insofar as it does not violate any existing access
restrictions (compare to the Usage Conditions).
Collaboration with the Zentralarchiv will involve no additional financial outlay for
the data depositor.
The Zentralarchiv requires the deposit of the computer-readable dataset, together with all
necessary background materials which allow complete documentation to be produced. At the
time of deposit, the depositor sets the access category, according to which the
dissemination of the data by the GESIS-ZA is regulated.
Cooperation with Data Depositors
Numerous important research institutes from the higher education and private sectors
make use of the Zentralarchiv for the archiving of their datasets. This permits scientists
to carry out empirical research work and to build upon their efforts. Existing knowledge
is therefore economically and optimally exploited.
