Eurobarometer Data Service Guide

The Eurobarometer web and data service at GESIS-ZA (formerly Zentralarchiv für Empirische Sozialforschung) offers basic information on the Eurobarometer surveys and attempts to support the interested user in the following fields:

  • basic technical and methodological information

  • identifying topics (questions) in the Eurobarometer survey series

  • access to documentation and data for secondary analysis (re-use)

  • supporting contacts and networks

Basic technical and methodological Information 

Identifying topics (questions) and surveys (studies)

  • ZA Study Descriptions - searchable data holding catalogue in German or English language

  • ICPSR Study Descriptions - searchable ICPSR data catalogue with access to documentation and data download for ICPSR members
     
  • Search in Codebooks & Questionnaires - free text search in the Standard, Eastern, Candidate Countries and Flash Eurobarometer question base
     

  • Standard EB - Trends - questions on social and political attitudes and European Union topics more or less regularly repeated over time (selection)

  • Standard EB - Special Topics - a large variety of special topics covered intermittently in additional thematic modules or supplementary parallel surveys, occasionally based on special sample groups

Access to Eurobarometer Documentation

  • Standard EB - Study profiles - tabular information for each Eurobarometer study (fieldwork dates, participating countries, main topics, errata reporting) and access to related documentation (study description, codebook, basic and field-questionnaires) and primary publications (bibliographic information and links to EC reports in electronic format). 

  • CEEB Surveys & Topics -  overview of Central and Eastern Eurobarometer surveys and topics including access to study descriptions, codebooks and reports

  • CCEB - Study profiles -  tabular information for each Candidate Countries Eurobarometer (vs. Standard EB study profiles)

  • Flash EB Study profiles - overview of surveys and topics with direct access to study descriptions and basic questionnaires 

Access to related Publications

  • Reports - structured links to the survey reports (results, tables) published by the European Commission

  • Bibliography - the GESIS-ZA is documenting bibliographic citations for the large number of  publications of any kind related to or based on Eurobarometer data analysis

Access to Data for Secondary Analysis (Order & Downloads) 

  • Available Data Set Editions - overview of available Eurobarometer studies and their respective processing status

  • Embargo Provisions - continuously updated list of questions temporarily under embargo on request of the principal investigator
     

  • Ordering data and documentation via internet - case level data (usually in SPSS format) and documentation (PDF) for all available Eurobarometer surveys can be ordered using a web form

  • ZACAT online access to Standard, Central&Eastern and Candidate Countries Eurobarometer, including study and variable retrieval, data browsing and download functionalities
      Please notice the unfortunately inescapable preparation and publication backlog for recent Standard Eurobarometer. If released by the Commission, they are available on individual order.
