February 2008: Original language documentation for all participating countries added

The European Values Study (EVS) is carried out under the responsibility of the European Values Study Foundation. The study was initiated by the European Value Systems Study Group (EVSSG) in the late 1970s and is a large-scale, cross- national and longitudinal survey research program. It covers the fields: religion and morality, politics, work and leisure, and primary relations.

The offer contains the data and documentation from the three waves of the European Values Survey conducted in the following countries:

1st wave
1981
Integrated dataset
(ZA4438)
Belgium, Canada (1982), Denmark, France, Great Britain, Germany (West), Iceland (1984), Ireland, Italy, Malta (1983), The Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway (1982), Spain, Sweden, USA (1982)
2nd wave
1990
Integrated dataset
(ZA4460)
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria (1991), Canada, Czech Republic (1991), Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Great Britain, Germany (East and West), Hungary (1991), Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta (1991), The Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway, Poland (1989), Portugal, Romania (1993), Slovakia (1991), Slovenia (1992), Spain, Sweden, USA
3rd wave
1999/2000
Integrated dataset (ZA3811)

National datasets
(ZA3776 - ZA3808)
Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany (East/West), Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey (2001), Ukraine

The comparison of question wordings used in the national languages of the third wave respectively in the master questionnaires of all three waves is supported:
  • Firstly, it is possible to compare the question wordings in all languages used in the participating countries of the 3rd wave. For this reason the question texts, answer categories, and show cards of the questionnaires of the national data sets were documented. Explanatory notes concerning differences between national and master questionnaire, difficulties arising from translation, and additional questions used in the national questionnaires were added.
The documentation of the integrated dataset of the 3rd wave (ZA3811) allows for comparison of the question wordings in all languages. The documentation of the national datasets (ZA3776 - ZA3808) allows for comparison of the questions in one or more languages fielded in the corresponding country.
Special Reports containing the documentation of the national questionnaires respectively the master questionnaires were set up for each country/language and wave (see the section 'Metadata' in the tree on the left).

  • Secondly, it is possible to compare wordings of functional equivalent questions from the master questionnaires of the three waves (ZA3811, ZA4460, and ZA4438). The link list "Comparative Questions 1981-1999/2000" is available in the integrated datasets for each variable used in more than one wave.

For more information on the EVS and the WVS, please see the websites for the European Values Study and the World Values Survey.

Both sites contain also a link to the data from the four waves of the Values Surveys carried out in 1981-84, 1980-93, 1989-1993 and 1999-2004. To facilitate time series analysis the data are integrated into one dataset and made available in an online analysis tool maintained by ASEP/JDS.
