The Social Science Infrastructure Services (GESIS) have documented all social science research results from the GDR which were not available prior to 1989 and have made them accessible for the research community.

The volume gives an overview of the seized stock of research reports and university papers as well as data from empirical investigations. In addition, the volume provides important background knowledge of the highly controversial situation of the social sciences in the former GDR and discusses the problematic situation of these disciplines during the turn of events. Furthermore, possibilities for the usage of the GDR research results for current research questions are shown and a list of archives is provided in order to support the access to various sources. The volume concludes with a list of social science research projects on the topic of the GDR between 1991 and 1997 as well as a selected bibliography of "Social sciences and the science system".

The collected papers contain the proceedings from a workshop. Detailed descriptions of sociological and statistical data or data sources and stocks of unpublished research reports and publications of different archives are presented. The research results are important not only for the sociological, but also for the contemporary historical youth research.
