Errata:
-
A user alerted us to a deviation from
the standard coding for the variable PARTY_LR (respondent's party
affiliation recoded to a left-right scheme). In the case of Austria,
the variable PARTY_LR is not based on the recoded party preference, but on
the respondent's self placement on a left-right scale. This means that
the labels of PARTY_LR are entirely misleading for Austria - do not use the
PARTY_LR variable from the integrated data set for that country! Users wishing to work with a recoded party preference (for comparison with
PARTY_LR for other countries) can find the Austrian party preference data in variable A_PRTY and can construct their own left-right recoding of parties with that
variable. Furthermore, the CD-ROM contains a separate Austrian country data
set which has all involved variables in a technically correct form: A_PRTY, PARTY_LR in
5-point version of the left-right self placement scale and PARTYBIS with the
original 10-point left-right self placement scale. Code 11 in PARTY_LR from
the country data set is "don't know". Note that even
PARTY_LR in the Austrian country data set does not
contain left-right codes derived from the preferred party's
left-right position, as ISSP standards would require. (2005-2-22, edited

The Russian original country questionnaire first
offered here was incorrect. Russia has now provided a new
version which can be downloaded above. (2005-6-17, MQ)

Different versions of the integrated file on the
distribution CD: The CD holds three different versions of the integrated ISSP
data set as SPSS system files. Due to necessary updates very
late in the production process, these files are not completely
identical. Our Spanish colleagues who created the files indicated that one of the
versions with English labels should be used (one named
<ISSP2001.SAV>, the other named <ISSP2001_V2.SAV> and found in subdirectory
\Data\ISSP2001\), while the version with Spanish labels
(<ISSP2001E.SAV>) should be avoided. <ISSP2001_V2.SAV>
does not contain the country data from Germany, Italy, and
Denmark, and a reduced number of cases for Australia.
Unfortunately, we
have no complete information about other differences between the two English versions. (2005-7-7, edited 2005-9-23, MQ)
-
Besides the integrated files, the CD-ROM also contains
individual data files from the participating countries. In two
cases, we know of problems with these files: 1. USA - the
country file is from ISSP 1999, not from ISSP 2001. (The correct
version was used for the integrated file.) 2. Australia - the
country file is not the most recent version and has a reduced
number of cases. (The correct version was used for the integrated
file in <ISSP2001.SAV>.) If you purchased the ISSP 2001 CD at the Central Archive, you
can request the correct versions of the two country data sets
for free
from us. (2005-7-7, MQ)

The codebook information describing the categories of
variables V38 and V39 is incorrect. Please refer to the value
labels in the SPSS data set.

Question 39 (V65) about frequency of political
discussions was asked in a deviating formulation in Russia: ISSP standard was "How often do you discuss politics
with
your friends?", with categories "Almost all the time",
"Most of the time", "Occasionally", "Almost never", "Can't
choose". Russia used: “How often do you discuss politics
with other
people?” with categories: “Often”, “Sometimes”, “Seldom”,
”Never”, “Hard to answer”. Thanks to our user Markku Lonkila
for alerting us to the problem and to Ludmila Khakhulina for
providing the translation of the Russian question. These differences must be taken into account when including
Russia in international comparisons of V65! (2005-9-23, MQ)

For Germany, the income variables D_INCO
(household income) and D_RINC (respondent's income) contain no
data in the integrated file <ISSP2001.SAV>. Users who have
the CD-ROM version can find the complete national data for
Germany in the subdirectory
\Data\Germany of the CD-ROM. It holds an SPSS system file for Germany which
contains the missing information in variables INCOME and RINCOME.
(Users who have obtained the integrated data set ZA3680 via
the ZACAT download system, please contact us, you will
receive the file via e-mail.) The data can be matched to the integrated file with V3 (country
code) and V2 (respondent ID) as key variables. (2006-04-03, MQ)
