CD-ROM plus "Listen to the Radio in the GDR: Data and Documents of the Sociological Research 1980-1989"

The CD contains 51 data sets, the corresponding documentation (questionnaires and codebooks) and information on selected research documents of the Sociological Department of the State Committee for Broadcasting at the Council of Ministers of the GDR, Berlin from 1980 to 1989.

From 1965 till 1989 the sociological department has been conducting surveys on the reception of the broadcasting program. In nearly 25 years the study collection amounted to 300 surveys of different kind. The work of the research team stopped after the reunification of Germany. In cooperation with the Deutschen Rundfunkarchiv (dra) Potsdam GESIS-ZA located parts of the study collection and included them in its holdings. After data processing and documentation in a data base these studies are now available for secondary analysis.

Most of the studies are standardised surveys on the reception of selected programs broadcasted the day before the survey was conducted.  These surveys comprise demographic questions, questions on the broadcast with respect to time and broadcast station as well as questions concerning who else was listening to the radio or what the respondent was doing while listing to the radio. Additional sets of questions on special topics of the broadcast program were added to complement the standardised surveys. These were repeated regularly and standards were developed for these questions as well.

The data sets on the CD are presented by using the data browser CodebookExplorer. It enables the browsing within the study and variable lists of all surveys. Additionally the questionnaires and the study descriptions are incorporated in the system. However you can find them in the respective directories on the CD as well.

The following information are available on the CD:

  • Meta data on study and question level (study view of the CodebookExplorer)
  • Structure of the variables that are replicated (trend view of the CodebookExplorer)
  • Questionnaires (pdf-documents) and study descriptions (text files)
  • Data analysis tool (frequencies, cross tabulations, comparison of variables), graphics
  • Data for secondary analysis (SPSS-files)
  • Codebooks (pdf-documents)
  • List of selected research papers of the Sociological Department of the State Committee for Broadcasting (The papers are available in the archive of the  Deutschen Rundfunkarchiv Potsdam on request.)
