Eastern Enlargement of the EU – Strategies of the Modernisation
Initial Workshop: From Transition to Integration. EU Enlargement Network

Date: 9-12 October 2003
Place:
Prague, Instiute of Economics, Czech Academy of Sciences
Organisers: GESIS Service Agency Eastern Europe, Berlin; Institute of Sociology,
University of Erlangen-Nürnberg; Institute of Sociology (Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic),
Faculty for Social Sciences, Charles University, and the French Centre for Research in Social Sciences (CEFRES)

The idea of the workshop goes back to an Expression of Interest we formulated together with partners from Eastern and Western Europe for the EU Call in June 2002. The main concern was to design ways of bringing together Eastern European Studies in East and Western Europe. Because of huge response we have decided to develop this small-scale network as a bottom-up initiative and start with an organisation of an initiatory workshop. At the same time German colleagues from Erlangen-Nürnberg together with Czech and Hungarian scholars planned a conference on “Eastern Enlargement of the EU – Strategies of the Modernisation” which should deal with similar topics. Because of this topical compatibility and further networking possibilities both events: the conference and the first network meeting were combined.
