A Probability-Based Mixed-Mode Access Panel
for the Social Sciences

Sample and Recruitment

Throughout the recruitment process, the GESIS Panel follows state of the art recommendations of building a probability based online access panel.

The reference population for the GESIS Panel is the German speaking population aged between 18 and 70 years and permanently residing in Germany. The approximately 4900 panelists are recruited from a random sample drawn from municipal population registers.

All people in the sample were interviewed in personal house visits with a computer-aided personal interview (CAPI) (2.3 MB) (in German only) and asked to participate in the panel. Mail questionnaires are sent to those participants who are not able or do not want to participate in online surveys. Every interviewed person is being incentivized for the recruitment interview as well as all following waves.

Further details of the recruitment process can be found in the Executive Summary: Recruitment for the GESIS Panel.

The executive summary of the recruitment process is based on the comprehensive report authored by TNS Infratest. Further details can be found there (in German only).
