This volume contains 45 specifically selected and reviewed presentations given at a conference that took place in Berlin at the end of 1994 with participants from 22 European countries. Among those attending were research and information experts from 12 Central and Eastern European countries.

The central themes were transformation research and the change in the social sciences in Central and Eastern Europe, specifically with regard to the interdependence between the availability of social science information and the quality of social science research. 

In the first chapter reports from the various countries on the state of Eastern European social sciences and their information needs are gathered. They are followed by reports on specific research projects related to the problems of transformation. The contributions printed in the third chapter give an insight into present information collections at hand, report on various information retrieval experiences, and discuss tools for information retrieval and their development. The fourth chapter describes international projects concerned with connecting the available information as well as with the optimization of its accessibility.
