This volume contains 45 specifically selected and reviewed presentations
given at a conference that took place in Berlin at the end of 1994 with
participants from 22 European countries. Among those attending were research and
information experts from 12 Central and Eastern European countries.
The central themes were transformation research and the change in the social
sciences in Central and Eastern Europe, specifically with regard to the
interdependence between the availability of social science information and the
quality of social science research.
In the first chapter reports from the various countries on the state of
Eastern European social sciences and their information needs are gathered. They
are followed by reports on specific research projects related to the problems of
transformation. The contributions printed in the third chapter give an insight
into present information collections at hand, report on various information
retrieval experiences, and discuss tools for information retrieval and their
development. The fourth chapter describes international projects concerned with
connecting the available information as well as with the optimization of its
accessibility.
Another ten reports from the conference, dealing
with bibliometric and scientometric methods, were published in the following
international journal:
Science and Science of Science
