Sixty years after the end of National Socialism and fifteen years after the collapse of state socialism the radical right movements and parties belong to political normality in Europe. However, the right wing extremists have been partly recording alarming successes in elections and in parliaments for more than ten (and in some Western European countries twenty) years.
The volume examines this phenomenon with a special view to Germany and Poland. It presents state of the social science research on radical right and xenophobia both in German-Polish comparison and in European context.
The publication discusses characteristic and causes of extreme-right attitudes and xenophobia as well as their interdependences. Furthermore, it includes contributions on the state and civil society reactions to the radical right movements in Germany and Poland. The reader can also find an appendix containing an overview of the most important scientific institutions and research projects in Germany and Poland dealing with radical right and xenophobia issues.
The volume contributions were presented during international workshop „The Radical Right and Xenophobia in Germany and Poland: National and European Perspectives", which was organised by the Chair of Political Science at the European University Viadrina in cooperation with GESIS Service Agency Eastern Europe Berlin within the framework of the German-Polish Year 2005/2006. The workshop, which was financially supported by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF), took place in Frankfurt (Oder) in November 2005.
