Erwin K. Scheuch (1928 - 2003) was one of the main instigators and creators of the social science infrastructure in Germany. This book contains a collection of his most important essays in this field. The first of four subject areas examines the demand by social sciences for an infrastructure while the second evaluates developments in this field. However, because Scheuch was not only a scientist, but also a politician, a planner and a fighter, the third part is devoted to the most important lines of conflict in infrastructural policy in which he was involved and in which decisions still have to be made today: data protection, the census and the association between social research and direct marketing. The fourth part contains a compilation of essays which place the infrastructure in Germany in the context of international cooperation. At the end of the book, Ute Scheuch reviews his commitment to the social science infrastructure.
