In this volume, the papers of a conference are published which examined the contribution of official statistics to research on the welfare state. The aim was to compare the supply of official statistics with the demand of researchers in policy counseling agencies and in the university. The supply of the German Federal Statistics Office is introduced by its president, the supply of the European Statistics Office by its department head for social indicators re-search. The demand of researchers in policy counseling agencies is presented by researchers of the two social partners, the demand of researchers at the university by representatives of social indicators research in economics and sociology. The conference has been organized by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Sozialwissenschaftlicher Institute in October 2002 in Leipzig.
