This volume contains the contributions to the 5th conference that has been held since 1995. The conference was staged jointly in Wiesbaden on 26 and 27 June 2003 by the German Federal Statistical Office, the Association of German Market and Social Research Institutes and the Association of Social Science Institutes.

After an introduction to the topic by the chairman (Dr. Manfred Ehling, German Federal Statistical Office), three articles provide an overview of the current state of Online surveys in academic social research (Dr. Ulf-Dietrich Reips, University of Zurich), in commercial market research (Hartmut Scheffler, TNS EMNID) and in official statistics (Dr. Thomas Pricking, North Rhine-Westphalian State Office for Data Processing and Statistics).

Following the overview articles, Erich Wiegand (ADM) explains the Quality standards and professional regulations for Web-based data surveys, Dr. Wolfgang Bandilla (Centre for Survey Research and Methodology) presents the Internet community as a basic whole and - as a direct subject link - Christiane Heckel (BIK Aschpurwis + Behrens GmbH) examines the Possibilities and limits of online samples.
Frank E. Zander and Thomas Lanninger (Ipsos GmbH) provide information on the possibilities of using Access panels as a basic for online surveys. Dr. Michael Bosnjak (University of Mannheim) uses numerous examples to demonstrate Methodical methods, current topics and extensions of Web-based questionnaire studies. Dr. Raimund Wildner (GfK AG) presents possibilities of Multimedia applications in online surveys and, finally, the article by Dr. Frank Knapp (Psyma Online Research GmbH) describes Online surveys beyond opinion polls.
