Newsletter - Social Science in Eastern Europe 2001- 2
EDITORIAL
Dear readers,
This issue contains within the heading "Western Europe" some information to
which we would like to draw your attention in particular. In a short
contribution the Social Science Research Centre Berlin (WZB) informs about its
activities with regard to the integration of social scientists of the Balkan
states into the Western European scientific community. In this context, a new
book "Social Sciences in Southeastern Europe", published by the International
Social Science Council, Paris and the Social Science Information Centre,
Bonn/Berlin is the focus of attention as well. Furthermore, it has been
reported about a network seeking to set up a joint entry portal on Eastern
Europe via the Internet. Institutions in the German-speaking area, which have
collected numerous links on and to Eastern Europe, intend to unite them under a
common roof.
Another couple of words on the demand for the Newsletter. Despite the fact that
since the beginning of the year 2000 we have been publishing the Newsletter in
English only, the number of its subscribers hasn't declined and increases
steadily. As per 1.5.2001, we registered 1170 subscribers, thereof 740 readers
got the print version and 430 were interested in the e-mail version. Compared
with the figures as of 31.12.2000 it means an increase of approx. 6.5 per cent
within the first four months of this year. The following statistics demonstrate
the growing demand for the Newsletter since its appearance in 1992.

We still record a monthly access of approx. 5000 to the Newsletter via the
Internet.
The unbroken interest in information on the social sciences in Eastern Europe
encourages us to continue the publishing of the Newsletter in the established
form.
