Departments: The organization of the Institute follows the structure of departments, each of them including different topics:

* Dep. of Macroeconomics - economic development and macroeconomic policy - methodology of macroeconomic and social policies, analytical and forecasting research; monetary and financial economics, taxation and budget deficit, development and formation of the incomes, consumption and social welfare, social policy and social protection of the population, labour market, family policy and development.

* Dep. of Economic of Firms - organization and management of the economic systems - institutional economics, entrepreneur theories; business environment, management and behaviour of enterprises, development and organizational changes of the companies, environment for SME development, competitive business organizations.

* Dep. of Regional and Sector Economics - territorial organization and regional economics, ecology and environmental protection, agriculture and provision policy, sector and industrial policy; regional cooperation and integration - specific focus on the Balkan and Black sea regions, cross-border regional relations, regional aspects of the industrial and agricultural policy.

* Dep. of International Economics - world economy, global and regional problems, economic relations between countries, regions, international institutions; capital markets, banking, debt management; International trade, international prices, competitiveness, international finance, macroeconomic models and policy of open economies, theory and practice of economic integration, European political cooperation and integration.

The management concept is based on the dual organization of research activity: stationary and problem oriented. The first case corresponds to the set up departments; while in the second case ad hoc teams are formed from different departments. These two kinds of organization structures supplement each other in pursue of solution to multidisciplinary and transition problems.

Main fields: The activities of the institute are focused on applied and theoretical research in the area of current and future developments in Bulgarian economics. The institute fulfils its educational function as part of the Academic School Centre for Economics. Its scientific staff teaches at various universities. The institute has an information department at its disposal, which offers various informational services, a library, and computer department.

Research: The institute's staff is currently working on the following research topics: Theoretical consideration of the process of transition to a market economy; economic growth in the time of transition, macroeconomic and regional parameters, social aspects, structural changes, ecological aspects, investment and control mechanisms, analysis and prognoses of economic development; international economic relations of the Bulgarian economy during the period of transition; international projects.

Current research projects:

* The Development of Corporative Relations and Corporate Governance in Bulgaria (Prof. Dr. Iliya Georgiev, Dr. Liliya Chankova, Dr. Evgeni Peev, Spartak Keremidchiev)

* Economic Environment for Competitive Agriculture in Bulgaria (Prof. Dr. Ludmil Petkov, Dr. Nikola Valchev)

* The Unemployment in Bulgaria - Evaluation and Possibilities of Reduction and Stabilisation (Dr. Vasil Tsanov, Dr. Pobeda Lukanova)

Periodicals: The Journal "Economic Thought" comes out in six issues per year, covering the entire spectrum of economic problems (in Bulgarian). The "Economic Studies" comes out in three issues per year (in Bulgarian). "Economic Studies" publishes the results of the research work of the Institute of Economics, and of the Economic Academy "D. A. Tsanov", on a wide range of economic problems - economic policies, branch restructuring, regional and environmental policies, financial and fiscal problems of the transition period, ownership and management of companies, social insurance, foreign economic relations and European integration. The periodical is addressed to the scientific and academic community and to experts, working in the field of economy.
