Historical development: 1974 the Centre of German Studies came into being; 1978/79 the Department of Research on Germany was established as one of the departments subordinate to the Institute of Political Science in Wroclaw; 1988 the Department converted into Chair of Research on Germany; 1995 the Chair was restructured into an Institute of German and European Studies (GES); 1997/98 the Department of Nationality Matters and Problems concerning Polish Minorities Abroad and department of research on Eastern Europe became additional specialisms in the Institute; In 1998/99 IGES has provided specialization for the Master's degree in three disciplines: European Integration, German Studies and East European Studies; in 2000 the Senate of the University of Wroclaw passed a resolution on restructuring of IGES into the Institute of International Studies.

Research:

* Dept. of International Economic Relations and European Integration: on European economic integration processes with special respect to problems of transborder co-operation and connections between the European Union and Central Europe; contemporary world economy

* Dept. of German 19th and 20th Centuries History: German and Austrian history of the 19th and 20th Centuries, contemporary political and economic relations in this area, development of German political thought towards Germany, German external affairs, Polish-German political relations and political culture of the German speaking countries

* Dept. of European Union Studies: broadly understood issues concerning research on the European Union - its development, policy, co-operation with other states and regions as well as on research on their member states. European problems are analyzed in the context of global processes and phenomena like globalization, regionalization. Polish foreign policy, including security constitutes another important research area. Issues related to international communication, media systems and multicultural questions in societies are treated as separate research areas

* Dept. of Research on Eastern Europe: current political phenomena and problems in East European countries as well as international relations within this region with special respect to Polish foreign policy towards East European countries

* Dept. of Nationality Matters and Problems concerning Polish Minorities Abroad: nationality processes in Europe, problems of national minorities their legal, political and social situation as well as matters related to national identity and nationalism. Matters of national minorities in Poland and of Polish minorities in the world, German minority and nationality problems in former Soviet Union countries

* Library edition "Niemcoznawstwo" (German Studies), since 1992

* Jubilee publications (three extensive volumes) periodical entitled: "Zblizenia. Polska - Niemcy" (Close-ups. Poland-Germany), since 1991 trice a year, scientific articles, interviews, reviews, reports, works of debuting young researchers, calendar of events and information on meetings and conferences published.

Teaching: Erasmus/Sokrates programme, programme of full-time courses and programme of part-time courses

Co-operations: Institute of Political Sciences and the Institute of Sociology at the University of Leipzig; the Free University of Berlin; the University of Jena; the University of Plymouth, the University of North London; the University of Bradford.

Journal description

Karta

The first German speaking issue of "Karta", a Polish historical quarterly journal has been published in 2000. It consists of articles (240 p.) on experiences of people of the 20th century in the German and Polish parts of Europe. "Karta" in the Polish language has been published since 1982. If the German edition proves to attract a sufficient audience, a permanent German edition will be established.
