Organization: MPI was founded as an independent organisation specialised for media research and education of media professionals, covering Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH) and the region of Southeastern Europe. It establishes an ever-widening network of media organisations, media professionals and experts, transcending the boundaries of language, politics and culture in the pursuit of excellence in both knowledge and practice.

MPI is an over-arching organisation. It focuses on reconstruction and development of BH and other media from the region through intensive training courses and extensive educational projects, media research and monitoring, publishing and consulting.

Main fields: MPI is there:

* to facilitate democratic processes in the region of Southeastern Europe through media research and education

* to build and foster networks of media organisations and professionals

* to support independent and professional journalism

* to bring regional media closer to Europe and the world through modernisation

Research: MPI Research Centre is to facilitate media modernisation and development in the region of Southeastern Europe through continuous research endeavour. They invest in knowledge with the purpose of supporting media transition in the region but also with a long-term objective of yielding outstanding results in media practice in mind. MPI Research Centre is thus involved in a variety of research projects, including media monitoring, short-term and long-term media analyses.

Research projects: In 2000:

* Media Landscape of Southeastern Europe

* Analysis of Services Provided by ONASA News Agency from Sarajevo

* Analysis of ATV Banjaluka Programming

* Analysis of BiH Public Broadcasters Programming

* Analysis of Programming By Una-Sana Cantonal TV

* RFE Research (panel research of Radio Free Europe's programming in 2000)

* `Journalism and Human Rights' - Publication

In addition, MPI is organising the Media Initiatives:

A communication network for professional journalism in Southeastern Europe emerged as a result of several years of co-operation of MPI with media, media outlets and professionals from several countries of Southeastern Europe, with following Network projects: Media on line; Media picture of the countries from Southeastern Europe; Education-information service for interethnic relationship; Slovenia: international conference on broadcasting legislation held; Montenegro: the conference of public TV broadcasters from Southeastern Europe

Teaching: The MPI School of Journalism was founded in Sarajevo in 1998 in cooperation with High College of Journalism from Lille in France. The school is intended for education of young journalists already employed by media who wish to advance their knowledge of journalism, but also of young graduates in the field of journalism who wish to complement their theoretical knowledge with practical specialisation.

Lectures/ Seminars: The Syllabus: preparatory week; three trimesters; consultations and final papers (for 22 students pro semester)

* 750 hours of active teaching

* 240 hours of consultations and preparation of the final papers

* 24 hours of presentations of final papers and exams

The projects of this school in 2000 were:

* "Seminar for journalists on investigating violations of journalist rights"

* "The right to free speech - How to protect It?"

* "Do even `Democratic' authorities want to control the media?"

Publications/ papers: Press clippings service (Research Centre), Media News ("SAFAX") and Media Online Journal

Events: "International Conference 'Legislation in the Field of Broadcasting - Public and Commercial Radio and TV'" (Bled, May 11-12, 2001); "The Meeting of State Televisions of Southeastern Europe in Bar" (24-26 May)

Services: News Agency "SAFAX" was set up in 1994 with the purpose of providing specialised news services containing information on events in BH as well as the region of Southeastern Europe. The Agency has developed a network of correspondents in all major cities and towns of BH and established close links with independent news agencies from other countries of the region. "SAFAX" also provides a wide range of services to local radio stations, including production, exchange and distribution of programming in relation to human rights, return of refugees and other important political and economic issues.

Educative and Informative Service for Minority Rights and Inter-Ethnic Relations: "Stina" news agency.
