Year of foundation: 1947

Historical development: The Institute was established in 1947 under the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR and merged with Tallinn Technical University in 1997 as an independent research institute.

Working groups:

* Group of natural and energy resource economics

* Group of economic theory and institutional development

Research topics:

* social development and social policy in Estonia in transition;

* adaptation of Estonian economy to integration processes in Europe;

* formation of market mechanisms and institutions;

* economic problems related to the use of local natural resources and development of the fuel-energy complex.

Three main current research projects:

* Modelling and socio-economic evaluation of the sustainable utilisation of Estonian natural resources - Anton Laur, Koidu Tenno, Lembit Aader

* Institutional structure and convergence: current problems of the Estonian socio-economic system - Ü.Ennuste, Urve Venesaar, Mare Viies, Teet Rajasalu, Irina Koljajeva, Tiia Püss, Alar Kein

* Economics of Estonian biodiversity - Üllas Ehrlich, Peep Krusberg, Kalju Habicht
