Organization: The Szeged Center for Security Policy is a joint project
of the Municipal Government of the City of Szeged, the Hungarian Academy of
Sciences and the University of Szeged. The Center functions as a public
foundation.
Main fields: The activities of the Center are built on three pillars:
scientific research, education, dissemination of knowledge.
In order to realise these objectives, the Center will engage in the following
activities:
. organisation of conferences
. publication and programming
. organisation of public lectures
. providing funding for attendance at conferences
Research: Szeged Centre for Security Policy and Department of Strategic
Studies at Swedish National Defence College
Project: Regional security building within the European framework in Central
Europe: the case of Hungary (Dr. Nicolaus Rockberger)
The security policy situation of Hungary is quite unique. Hungary is a new
member of NATO and on its way to EU. But Hungary's situation in Europe is
different from most other NATO and EU members. Today no one of Hungary's
neighbour states is a NATO member and no one is likely to become a member for
several years. Also, most of Hungary's neighbour states will most probably
enter EU much later than Hungary. Hungary is the only new member directly
bordering a conflict and war zone, former Yugoslavia.
The study will deal with Hungary as a new member state of NATO and its ideas
and aims as member and experience so far - for example Kosovo war. Of special
interest is Hungary's relations to this Balkan neighbours and Ukraine, states
with different security policy. How is or could security be built up in this
region? Are there different ideas about it? How will Hungary aim to strike the
balance between all - European (OSCE), NATO, EU, regional and sub-regional
approaches to security? Will it seek "exclusive" rather than "inclusive"
solutions towards the Balkans? How will the "new dimension of security" be
handled in difference for a and organisations? How do we apply the qualified
concept "security complex" to the Hungarian setting?
Teaching: Training Centre with several courses.
Events: The Center will organise a major annual conference. Between the
annual conferences, the Center will organise seminars for politicians,
diplomats, military leaders, prominent businessmen coming from neighbouring
countries.
Library: The establishment of an information center and a reference
library is underway.
Women and Men, Men and Women: Research on gender in Hungary at the turn
of the millennium
Date: 22 - 23 November 2002
Conference site: Budapest
In 2001, the Gender and Cultural Studies Centre of the Budapest
University of Economics and Public Administration was founded. On 22-23
November 2002 the new centre organises a conference in order to summarise the
achievements of Hungarian gender studies. The main objective of the Center for
Gender and Cultural Studies is to co-ordinate and develop the researches and
education concerning gender and society at the Budapest University of Economic
Sciences and Public Administration (BUESPA). In this way this activity of the
university will be better integrated both into Hungarian and international
scientific networks. In its orientation the Center wants to integrate all
disciplines, which are called like "Gender Studies", "Women Studies", and
"Feminist Studies". According to our original aims, our activity will focus on
genders, thus both on men and women. Conference language: Hungarian. It holds
an interdisciplinary characteristic through involving researchers and lecturers
from different fields, like sociology, political sciences, work economy,
economic sciences, and is open to all inter-institutional activities (i.e. to
cooperation with institutions both in Budapest and in the countryside). From
autumn 2002, the Center for Gender and Cultural Studies offers a minor in
gender studies for students of economic sciences as well, which is an important
step of integration gender issues into the regular curriculum
