Network Eastern Europe

The "Network Eastern Europe" held its third workshop on March 21, 2002 at the Berlin European Academy. In December 2000, 24 persons from various institutions (mainly from non-university institutions in the German speaking countries) had met in Berlin on the initiative of the Social Science Information Centre, the German Society for East European Studies, the East-West-Science Centre, Kassel to discuss the chances of cooperation in the building of an Eastern Europe specific website of Internet links. At the second meeting in March 2001 a concrete procedure for a joint Internet offer was developed. The first website integrating the link-lists of nine institutions went online in October 2001 under the URL: http://www.Osteuropa-Netzwerk.de.

18 persons participated in the third workshop in March 2002, including five representatives from institutions that so far had not been involved. Another seven institutions had signalled interest in participating, but had not been able to attend the meeting. By March 2002 34 suppliers of Internet information on Eastern Europe have joined the project or are interested in doing so in the next future.

Several reports were presented describing the completed tasks, the layout and structure of the website, the registered visits of the website, the interests of potential new members of the network. Afterwards, the participants discussed further steps for the quantitative and qualitative development of the network and medium-term prospects.

Until the end of 2002 the main focus of the group's work will be on the integration of link-lists from new participants as well as on public relations. The group plans to expand the website to an Internet portal which will offer a central access to information on Eastern Europe in the German speaking countries. Furthermore, additional information on databases, news and discussion lists, electronic journals, full text working papers, etc. should be integrated and an English version of the website should be created.

These new developments can only partially be achieved with the present capacities. Therefore, an endeavour will be started to acquire additional funds. In the fall of 2002 a new meeting will take place.
