parties or institutions linked to political parties
Main fields: The Tocqueville Research Center is an independent
institute specialised in comparative political analysis. It manages research
projects and builds on a scholarly network in Hungary and other Central and
Eastern European countries.
Its main areas of current activity are:
* collecting and disseminating data on local governments and local democracy
in Central and Eastern Europe;
* conducting mail surveys among local politicians and the general public;
* promoting awareness of, and discussions about the work of Alexis de
Tocqueville.
Research: The main project of the Center is the Indicators of Local
Democratic Governance in Central and Eastern Europe Project. The sponsor of the
project is the Local Government and Public Service Reform Initiative (LGI) at
the Open Society Institute, Budapest. The project aims to help decision-makers
and researchers assess and explain the level of local democracy in
post-communist countries in CEE. The questionnaires for the 2002 round of
surveys are now available. The book drawing on the data collected in 2001,
entitled "The State of Local Democracy in Central Europe", is now also
available to order.
Publications/ papers: T-RC publishes an email and on-line newsletter
that contains up-to-date information about its activities. Background studies
are also occasionally published. These papers are primarily for T-RC staff and
partners, and often constitute first drafts.
Services: A new, independent knowledge base
"localdemocracy.info" is an initiative of Tocqueville Research Center
(T-RC), with a special focus on local political life in Central and Eastern
Europe (CEE). It is in the pre-phase for the time being. It should be fully up
and running by the end of 2002. The collections of data include:
* the characteristics of local government systems
* the socio-economic characteristics of municipalities and regions
* local government finances
* electoral data
* aspects of local civil society
* public opinion polls
