Ongoing research projects of the Institute of Sociology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (all projects funded by VEGA - the Slovak Grant Agency for Sciences

* Classes and Stratification in Social Changes of Slovakia (Head: Buzik, B.; Participants: Buncak, J.; Vasecka, I.; Katarína Strapcova, K.; Duration: 2002-2004)

The empirical goal is to study the changes in the stratification and class structure of the Slovak society since the beginning of the 1990s and to trace the old and new differentiating processes and their impacts on overall social mobility. The data of several sociological surveys will be re-analysed. The theoretical goal is to compare various theoretical models of social stratification and attempt at the elaboration of the theoretical framework for the interpretation of the stratification and class processes in the contemporary Slovak society as well as for reconstruction of the basic assumptions of stratification and class theories as they are present in the published sociological studies. To form the hypothesis about.

* Transformation impacts on developmental disponibilities of the settlements and their communities in Slovakia (Head: Gajdos, P.; Participants: Moravanska, K.; Pasiak, K.; Duration: 2002 - 2004)

The goal is to analyse the specific positions of various types of settlements and their communities in Slovakia and to present the contextual framework of their present social, cultural and civilisation development. The point is to study interrelations of their human potentials and civilisation dispositions and to elaborate the typology of settlements according to their developmental dispositions in the context of new developmental trends. The intention is to reveal complex grounding of certain types of settlement problems in the settlement types, as well as to look for the possibilities of their solution from the perspectives of both the EU accession process and the effectiveness of the public administration reforms.

* Social and cultural factors of political orientations and electoral behaviour in Slovakia (Head: Kriv[yacute], V.; Participants: Feglova, V.; Podoba, J -Institute for Ethnology S.A.S.; Duration: 2002 - 2004)

The goal of the project is to extend the knowledge of socio-structural and cultural factors of political attitudes and electoral behaviour in Slovakia, its municipalities, communities and districts. The current data on the level of communities will be drawn from 2001 Census and parliamentary elections in 2002. The project employs surveys and electoral statistical data of 1946 and 1990 elections on the levels of communities and districts. Their analysis is to be combined with the "local spot" depth of political-anthropological explorations. Along the regional, urban-rural, ethnic and confessional dimension, the project focuses on the marginal territorial environments as the explanatory variable of electoral behaviour.

* Systemic and cultural determinants and limits of family transformation and gender role attitudes (Head: Piscova, M.; Participants: Bausova, M.; Duration: 2002 - 2004)

The goal is to identify the most relevant changes in the family & gender role attitudes and, to uncover the main formative factors of the gender role ideology. A special attention will be given to the comparison of the former state-socialist countries and West European countries. A long-lasting women' labour participation in former state-socialist countries will be considered as the significant determinant of the gender role attitudes differences. In Slovakia, the diversity of family forms and their subsequent acceptation as socially legitimate, increases slowly. The division of gender roles, fixed in family and work expectations and stereotypes, plays the significant part in these processes.

* Slovak Archive of Survey Data (Head: Strapcova, K.; Participants: Cenka, A.; Stodolova, S.; Duration: 2002 - 2004)

The goal is to create a primary data catalogue, and then to attempt at systematic documentation of the existing social science datasets reserve. The catalogue will enable an effective orientation researchers in the Slovak primary data field and will simplify an access and enable the secondary analyses, and promote comparative, longitudinal research. The archive will facilitate the standardization and verification of the methods used in the analysis of data. The goal is also to integrate the Slovak Archive into the existing network of the social science data archives and exchange the information within the scientific community.

* The Construction of Social Differences and Identities. A Border Work (Head: Kusa, Z.; Participants: Findor, A.; Cambalikova, M.; Duration: 2001 - 2003)

The goal of the project is to study the construction of social differences in the mass media from ethno-methodological perspective. The main way is to study categorisation procedures. The focus is on so called "unbiased descriptions" that significantly contribute to the naturalization of differences and that are to diminish the self-defence capacity of categorised. The focus is also on the examination of the presentation practices of personal identity in mass media and on the study of how the "border work" is the constituent of the presentation of modern subject, as well as how social actors perform and manage the presentation of their autonomous agency as being part of solidarity bonds.

* A Century of Slovak Sociology (Head: Turcan, L.; Participants: Klobuck[yacute], R.; Laiferova, E.; Duration: 2001 - 2003)

The goal is to work out and critically review the complex developments of Slovak sociology in the 20th century, their actors and counter-actors, the forceful measurements undertaken several times to diminish the impact of sociology, and their outcomes. The period under the study comprises works from various traditions, such as extreme positivism (sociography), positivism and scientism (Lajciak, later Hirner), social utopism (J. von Schulpe, J. Palka), religious sociology and ideological non-empirical sociology of Marxism Leninism. The aim is also to analyse the stages of the institutionalisation of sociology (establishment of sociological seminar at Comenius University, impact of Czech sociologists in Slovakia).

* Social-Spatial Identification of Local Community as a Social and Cultural Phenomenon (Head: Faltan, L.; Participants: Sastn[yacute], Z.; Strussova, M.; Malíkova, M.; Duration: January 2000 - December 2002)

The aim of the project is to identify factors that influence the shaping of social and spatial identification of local community in the period of intensive civilisation changes when traditional factors of local micro-world clash with supra-local (global) values. The assumption is gradual penetration of local community life by the values that are in their essence less and less spatially determined and their confrontation with original(traditional) values would also determinate (have impact on) changing form of internal integrity such communities and their identification with given locality.

* Renaissance of Civil Society, Citizen and Citizenship in Slovakia in the Context of Self-Integrating Europe and Information Humankind (Head: Machacek, L.; Participants: Cambalikova, M.; Rosko, R.; Duration: January 2000 - December 2002)

The research objective is to study not enough studied conceptual aspects of post-November renewal of civil society in Slovakia, as well as to reflect new phenomena and trends that have followed breaking Parliamentary election in 1998. The special attention will be given to the dialectics of civil society and the state, mediating function of collective actors, heuristic potency of the concept "civil-crazy". This innovative concept, together with traditional concept of democracy, represents a toll that could contribute to making precise our perspective on the developmental phases of civil society. The analysis will reflect revolutionary fact of the origin of capable for action non-party (independent) stratum of citizen in the structure of civil society in Slovakia, its successful cooperation with political opposition in election campaign and the direction of its post-election reproduction.
