* National Self-Identification of Diaspora Ethnoses
Head: Shapiro, Vladimir
Duration: 1997-2001
Institution: Institute of Sociology, Russian Academy of Sciences, e-mail:
sekretar@isras.ru
Abstract: Project objectives: analysis of national identification and
self-identification processes of ethnic diasporas (ED) in Russia and Ukraine:
the construction of typologies of national identities of various ethnic
diasporas, finding common and specific traits in their identity, history, and
contemporary agenda.
The project sets out to bring out the type of interrelations and mutual
influence of personal group ("solidarity") and institutional aspects
of ED national identification. In particular, the project focuses on a
comparison of instrumental effectiveness of spontaneous, independent,
"activist" national movements and solidarities (voluntary
self-organisation, activism, self-determination), on the one hand, and
bureaucratic, legal, management and financial impact, on the other. Other
objectives: the definition of the role of ED national self-determination in the
general social and cultural change ongoing in Russian and Ukrainian societies;
social and historical analysis of the "lifecycle" (ethno-genesis) of
individual typical ethnic diasporas; the study of the "historic
memory" concept regarded as the basic structural component of national
self-determination; attempts at an understanding of the ED "ethnic
solidarity" phenomenon in the context of global and civilisational change.
