Newsletter - Social Science in Eastern Europe 1996-4

PROMOTION OF RESEARCH

In previous editions of this newsletter, very different kinds of information on the promotion of research for social scientists concerned with Eastern Europe was published. This newsletter will remain true to form. Because this special edition is focused on German social science research concerned with Eastern Europe, the intention is to give a broad overview across all research projects dealing with Eastern Europe conducted within the scope of graduate schools or foundations. The following compilation was made possible only through the help and the co-operative efforts on the part of representatives from graduate schools as well as from the Volkswagen Foundation, the Hans Böckler Foundation and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Our thanks goes to the above mentioned institutions. We intend to continue this list in one of the next editions of this newsletter and request other research funding providers to submit to us information about their social science grants for research on Eastern Europe and the respective receivers and projects.

Volkswagen-Foundation

Main area of promotion: "Joint paths to Europe - Foundations of and examples for co-operation with Central and Eastern Europe in the humanities and social sciences"

This central objective shall bring about an improvement for the conditions of scientific work and academic teaching in the humanities and social sciences directly to the places where it is needed in countries of Central and Eastern Europe. It shall also strengthen multilateral co-operation within the European context. The distinctive purpose of promotion and funding is to set an example for the nascent infrastructural assistance so crucial for the reform process. The foundation puts special emphasis on working together with German scientists in preparation and implementation of these goals. Part of the envisioned promotion calls for exemplary academic teaching projects, the development of curricula and university programs, translations of scientific literature and learning materials, special programs aimed at the education and further education of junior scientists and recruits, summer schools and symposia. By means of these goals, the promotion is intended to achieve the most far-reaching impact in terms of a stimulation and multiplicator effect. Perspectives for a continuation play a significant role. For projects involving a more complex and long-term set-up, it is suggested that a pilot project be set up in advance for testing and a gradual consolidation.
