The researchers at GESIS-ZUMA’s European Centre are engaged in developing and
improving protocols and procedures for conducting, evaluating, and
documenting cross-cultural and cross-national survey projects. Research
activities include:
Applied
research - Sampling designs for multi-population
surveys; Translation procedures and translation assessment; Harmonisation of
socio-economic and other background variables; Metadata and documentation of
survey processes and outcomes; Tools for data collection monitoring.
Basic
research - Questionnaire design for cross-cultural surveys; Basic research on
translation and “equivalence”; Instrument design and documentation
tools; Answer scales across languages and cultures; Oral translations in the
survey context.
