Project description:
The special promotion measure CARMEN focused on achieving qualitatively improved internet search results, as compared with search engines, in searches for information that has been made accessible in different ways. In workpackage 12 cross concordances between different documentation languages, universal and specialized classifications and thesauri were intellectually developed for the fields of mathematics, physics and social sciences. The goal was to allow one to proceed from a familiar system when doing searches in scattered databases with different classifications and keywords, while maintaining the ability for users to switch from one to the other without having to deal with the specifics. In the classification area cross concordances between the universal classifications Regensburg Joint Classification (Regensburger Verbundklassifikation RVK) and Basis Classification (Basisklassifikation BK) and the specialized classifications Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC), Physics and Astronomy Classification Scheme (PACS) as well IZ's Social Science Classification were created. For the thesauri prototypes of cross concordances were created for selected fields of the social sciences between the Subject Authority File (Schlagwortnormdatei SWD), IZ's Social Science Thesaurus and the keyword material of the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF). The base material consisted of terms from sociology, methods of social research, political science and educational research.
For the examination of the cross concordances exemplary tests were accomplished on the basis of simulated data base searches.
