Comparative study of the retrieval instruments MESSENGER (MES) and FULCRUM (FUL) is performed as part of the project GIRT (German Indexing and Retrieval Test database) the objective being to test the performance of modern, intelligent indexing and retrieval systems as compared with conventional standard systems. In this particular case the quality of a retrieval instrument based on automatic indexing (FUL) is compared in a user test with a standard free-text search (MES). The first retrieval instrument does not use GESIS-IZ descriptors and delivers a search result ranked by relevance, the standard free-text search was supplemented by IZ's intellectually generated descriptors.
