Project description:

MURBANDY was launched as a research project at the Space Applications Institute (SAI) of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European commission in Ispra (Italy). The project seeks to develop procedures to continuously document changes in land usage in over 20 European and neighboring metropolitan areas via remote transmitted data (satellite pictures for example) and deriving indicators from those. A computer-aided model is created based on that which is used to simulate the future development of land usage in urban areas. The goal is improved support of decision makers at the local and European levels regarding questions of a sustainable and environmentally compatible city planning.
At GESIS-IZ the prototype of a user-friendly internet access was developed for the geographically coded data generated in MURBANDY. This prototype will offer scientists easy access to the data and contains possibilities for visualization and analysis as an integrated system. The interface design opens new paths in presentation and interaction. Searches and results analysis blend within one screen via dynamic screen adaptation and visual formalisms. The prototype was created in Java and can be used as an independent application and within a web browser (Applet).
