Scientists rely on a variety of information sources in the search for social science literature. In addition to the various conventional libraries (university libraries, institutes and research facilities) there are pure reference databases, such as SOLIS/SOFIS, and increasingly more digital documents and internet sources as well. All these different document pools were subject to different documentation languages and accessible with different information retrieval systems involving different user interfaces, search languages and document formats. So previously users had to familiarize themselves with different documentation languages and information retrieval systems in order to formulate and enter search criteria in different ways and then sort through the results for duplicates. Funded by the German Research Society, the Social Science Virtual Library aims to speed up and simplify this information gathering process. In addition to a unified user interface and results presentation, translation components between the different documentation languages have been developed. The goal is to allow the user to search in all data pools utilizing one familiar retrieval system. Therefore the search request will be translated into all the other retrieval system and documentation languages. This offers the possibility for searching in various libraries and specialized databases using one single search.

Following completion of the first project phase (May 1999 to April 2001) an prototype is now in use. It is currently being used for evaluations and presentations, but is expected to be made available to a broader public at the end of the year.

The second project phase (through October 2002) will focus on the integration of web sources via the social science clearinghouse. Further objectives include the realization of an online ordering component (ordering documents from libraries/paper delivery service directly out of the system), the internationalisation of the system as well as new translation components based on neuronal networks.
