Applicant and Candidate Countries Eurobarometer

On the track to European Union membership

In October 2001, the European Commission launched a parallel series of surveys in the 13 countries that at this time were applying for European Union membership, the 13 Candidate (initially Applicant) Countries: Bulgaria, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Turkey.

A pilot survey was conducted in Winter 1999/2000. Until the EU enlargement in 2004 representative national samples (n=1000) were drawn up to five times a year and interviewed face-to-face in the respective national languages.

Unlike former Central and Eastern Eurobarometer, the Candidate Countries Eurobarometer included selected trend questions and topical modules, which were to a large extent comparable to the Standard series.

  • The main survey results are published by the European Commission in official survey reports.
