The European Values Study (EVS) is a large-scale, cross-national and longitudinal survey research program. It is carried out under the responsibility of the European Values Study Foundation.

With the aim to explore basic values the first wave was conducted in 1981 in 16 countries. For the examination of the dynamics of value change a large part of questions was repeated in the following waves conducted in 1990 and 1999/2000 in 29 respectively 33 countries.

The range of topics covered in the first and second wave includes the main domains of life: work and leisure time, family and sexuality, religion, politics and ethics. New issues in the third wave are solidarity, social capital, democracy, and work ethics.

    Access to data and documentation

    • Data access to the three EVS waves is provided online through the Online Study Catalogue ZACAT.
    • The Study Overview and the Study Profile pages for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd wave provide detailed information and access to data and documentation.

    Further information

    • The European and World Values Surveys were integrated into the Value Surveys by ASEP/JDS in Spain to enable cross-national and cross-cultural comparisons. As there are different sources available to get access to the data additional links are listed on the Data Access page.
    • European and world wide comparative survey projects since 1948 are listed and referenced separately in a tabular historical overview, including the Global Barometer projects, the World and European Values Studies, ISSP, the European Social Survey etc.
