The European Values Study (EVS) is a large-scale, cross-national and longitudinal survey research program. It is carried out under the responsibility of the European Values Study Foundation.
With the aim to explore basic values the first wave was conducted in 1981 in 16 countries. For the examination of the dynamics of value change a large part of questions was repeated in the following waves conducted in 1990 and 1999/2000 in 29 and 33 countries respectively. The fourth wave includes in total 46 European countries.
The range of topics covered in the first and second wave includes the main domains of life: work and leisure time, family and sexuality, religion, politics and ethics. New issues in the third wave are solidarity, social capital, democracy, and work ethics. The fourth wave has a persistent focus on a broad range of values and highly comparable questions across waves.
