How are the raw data processed with SPSS?
On our internet pages you can find all Microcensus SPSS-Setups
for creating an SPSS-System File which are available as Scientific Use
Files.
The SPSS-Setup can be used for the following tasks:
- Importation of the raw data as it is provided by the federal Statistical
Office
- Transforming alphanumeric variables into numeric variables
- Replacing missing values (blanks)
- Recoding und Declaring the missing values
- Adding Variable Labels
- Adding Value Labels
- Storing the final SPSS-Systemfile
The raw data file provided by the Federal Statistical Office contains all
the variables of the
Microcensus. To make the above mentioned SPSS setup usable for every
possible selection of variables, all variables are included. Variables you
have not ordered will appear as a 0 or BLANK in your raw data file. To
create a system file only containing variables that you have ordered,
please do the following: in the SPSS setup (setupXX.sps) at the last
instruction to ´save outfile´ select the option /keep = (variable name) and name the variables that you have ordered.
Example:
SAVE OUTFILE = 'name.sav' /Keep=EF1 EF2
General information about the Microcensus as well as about the
processing of raw data with SPSS, can be found in the saved data, together
with the following Setup: readmeSetup19XX.pdf (txt).

How can I transform an SPSS-System File into a
STATA-System File?
With the programmes DBMS/Copy
or Stat/Transfer,
it is possible to reformat an SPSS-System File into a STATA-System File,
Both companies offer the programmes for implementation.
