ISSP Translation Methods Group

In 1995 a translation workshop was held at former ZUMA, Germany attended by ISSP members who had conducted translation experiments. Since then GESIS-ZUMA has continued to lead the ISSP translation research groups and has conducted basic research on the following topics:

  • answer scales in translation
  • back translation
  • using think alouds to assess translations
  • using probe interviews to assess translations
  • providing translated versions of questionnaires.
In 2005 the ISSP translation group launched a new project on answer scales. The 2005 report can be downloaded here.

The translation group is co-ordinated by Janet Harkness. The ten  member countries are Germany, Israel, Japan, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Uruguay, and Taiwan.
