Usually social inequality refers to the unequal distribution of
resources and goods between different social strata and to the
inequality of living conditions of individuals or groups of persons that
is connected with the former. Empirical research on social inequality
mainly focuses on two topics. One major research topic in this context
is the extent and structure of social inequality. Examples for this kind
of research are studies on the distribution of income, on social
stratification or the class structure of a society and on
gender-specific or ethnic inequalities. A second focus of research is
the legitimation of social inequality or problems in its legitimation
respectively.
This is the main subject of the
study "Inequality and Polarization:
A comparative study of income distribution and value orientations in Germany
and Canada." This study is financed externally by funds that
were granted in the context of the TransCoop-Programme. The project is
realised in joint cooperation by W. Glatzer (Frankfurt/Main), S. Langlois (Quebec),
H.-H. Noll (Mannheim) and L. Roberts (Winnipeg).
