EXANDA – A web-based utility to explore and analyze data
Overview
Exanda offers in the current state on-line analysis access to survey data through web
browsers.
The current features include tabulation (frequency counts and percentages) and
clustered bar charts for two or three variables. Optional case selection for other
variables and weighting is also possible. The results are generated dynamically on user choice.
The results are offered in various output formats:
- HTML for web browsers
- PDF for printing
- XLS spread sheet (for further processing in Microsoft Excel or Open Office)
- Bar charts as PNG (common pixel image format for web browsers) or as zoomable SVG (scalable vector graphics)
Exanda is currently used to offer on-line analysis access to the German Welfare Survey (welfare development, integration, and exclusion in intra-German and European comparison); On-line
analysis (German).
The version of Exanda is in beta state. An enhanced version will be released in the next months as free software under the terms of the GNU General Public License.
The DDI format is currently used at two places.
- The database table definitions are generated on the basis of the variable descriptions in DDI
documents.
- In an intermediary XML stage of the dynamic table generation process the DDI format is used for the metadata together with the XHTML 2.0 table model for the analysis results.
Features in preparation (analysis component):
- Means, standard deviation on groups defined by control variables
- More interactive components for the bar charts in SVG format
- Enhanced user interface for the search of variables and for the case selection
- Language selection for the user interface
General goal of Exanda is to have a collection of software components for building information systems for survey data based on DDI
documents.
