Module Standard Setups

Module Specific Data Preparation/Documentation Materials

This page hosts the information required for actually coding a country's data file before it is deposited at the Archive. For this purpose, it provides so called Standard Setups for each individual ISSP module. The Standard Setups define the variable and value definitions for the integrated data file of that ISSP module. All country data sets must be processed and prepared to match the structure of the Standard Setup before the material is delivered to the GESIS Data Archive for integration and archiving.

In many cases, the ISSP questionnaire is part of a larger survey. However, the data set supplied to the archive should only contain the variables from the ISSP questionnaire (including the optional variables of such a module, if they have been asked, and the standard background variables). Variables in national data sets that were not already defined in the respective Standard Setup found here will usually not appear in the final integrated file.

If required, more materials and coding hints are offered along with the Standard Setup of a given module. Other relevant elements of every national data deposit are offered on the General Documentation page.

If errors or problems in the setup files are detected, revised versions are made available. ISSP members working with the setup files are therefore kindly asked to notify us of any problems they discover!

The setup files are available in two formats. All members may use SPSS syntax files, or they can opt for using the special ISSP data coding application, the ISSP DataWizard. Users of the ISSP DataWizard need the files in XML format. For support on the DataWizard, please contact the Archive staff.

Standard Setup for ISSP 2012 (Family and Changing Gender Roles IV)

Download the SPSS syntax file

2011-12-22:

  • The demographic part of the Standard Setup 2012 on Family and Changing Gender Roles is based on the revised version of the Background Variables Guidelines, 2010-12-10 and the BV Questionnaire for the ISSP 2012. Please note that the missing values provided in this Standard Setup are thus recommended. If you have surveyed or collected more missing values in your data we would propose to insert the additional categories together with the country specific documentation.

2011-12-22:

  • The demographic part of the Standard Setup 2011 on Health is based on the revised version of the Background Variables Guidelines, 2010-12-10 and the BV Questionnaire for the ISSP 2011. Please note that the missing values provided in this Standard Setup are thus recommended. If you have surveyed or collected more missing values in your data we would propose to insert the additional categories together with the country specific documentation.

2011-01-27:

  • An error was corrected, everyone please use the updated version! The missing variable V19 was added.

2010-11-26:

  • The demographic part of the Standard Setup 2010 on Environment is based on the revised version of the Background Variables Guidelines, 2009-08-27. Please note that the missing values provided in this Standard Setup are thus recommended. If you have surveyed or collected more missing values in your data we would propose to insert the additional categories together with the country specific documentation.

2009-02-19:

  • Please note, that 3 (demographic) questions of the module part are duplicated to the demographic background variables to provide for continuity of the ISSP Standard demography. Q10a (V44), Q19a (V64), Q19b (V65) are part of the 'module' questionnaire. They appear again as part of the demographics: TOPBOT, WRKTYPE, ISCO88, respectively. Correspondence: Q10a (V44) - TOPBOT, Q19a (V64) - WRKTYPE, Q19b (V65) - ISCO88.

2009-02-17: Second version.

  • Modification in variable ATTD_EXT: an error in the value label of code 5. 'About once a year' was corrected to 'About once a month'.
  • In FI_PRTY the value label of  code 7. 'Christian League' was modified to 'Christian Democrats'. Code 9 'Reform Group' was removed.
  • Please note, that V59 V60 contain missing value categories 98. 'Don't know', which are not part of the official basic questionnaire.

2008-02-02: First version.

  • Special coding instructions on ATTEND/Q. 24-Q.26 and RELIG/Q. 20-23: ATTEND: In the Religion 2008 module, members should administer the background variable on Respondent's attendance as requested by the Religion Drafting Group, i.e. with the same set of nine response categories as in Q 24-26/V56-V58. Please code this detailed information into the variable ATTD_EXT.
  • Furthermore, the final data set (and accordingly, the Standard Setup) will contain a second variable for the Respondent's attendance. This variable will be recoded by the Archive from the more detailed version above to have only eight categories, consistent with the usual coding scheme according to the background variables scheme for ATTEND.
  • RELIG/V48-V55: Q. 20-23/V48-V55 should be coded exactly as the respondent's own current religion, which is coded into RELIG and RELIGGRP. Therefore, there are two variables for each of Q. 20-23, a first one with the detailed religion codes, a second one with a classification.

2007-06-11:

  • Value labels of variables MARITAL and COHAB have been adapted to the background variables list, hopefully reducing the confusion about COHAB covering people living in a marriage or not (intention: COHAB should include only UNmarried respondents)
  • Modification of ATTEND, label of code 7: less frequently than once a year.
  • New variable "SUBSCASE" to cover case substitution flagging. New labels for CZ_INC, CZ_RINC and CZ_PRTY as provided by Czechia with 2006 deposit.
  • Removed periods from line ends in COMMENTS, to avoid SPSS error messages.

2007-01-19:

  • An error in the values of V39/Question 8b was corrected, everyone please use the updated version! "Board games" wrongly was counted as a category of its own (Code 1). This has now been removed, the other categories have all moved up one code. Thus, "Backgammon" is now code 1 and so on.

2007-01-11:

  • New system of ISO country coding completely implemented. Numerous updates in country specific background variables, in particular standardisation of missing values.

2006-03-13: First version.

Adding/Updating Value Labels

ISSP members, in particular on occasion of their first ISSP survey, are asked to supply the Data Archive with their country specific VALUE LABELS as soon as their country's field questionnaire is ready. Only then can such label updates be included into the standard setup files above. All ISSP members are asked to supply updated country specific VALUE LABELS if these changed compared to previous standard setups.
