If you prefer to have a book in your hand rather than stare at a monitor, use the libraries of the SOWIPORT partners. You will find there a large assortment of social science literature and much more. Use our library services such as interlibrary lending or delivery service to have the requested literature brought to you.

German Centre of Gerontology (DZA)

The German Centre of Gerontology has the largest specialty library in the German speaking areas. It contains literature on the subjecs of gerontology and assistance/policy/work with the elderly and in addition, other disciplines related to the topics of old age and ageing.

  • Tuesday 10.00 - 19.00, Wednesday and Thrusday 10.00 - 16.00
  • As this is a reference and open access library there is no borrowing of materials.

DZI - German Information Center for Social Issues

The DZI - German Information Center for Social Issues collects and documents relevant publications on specific, related topics and gray literature in the area of theory and practice of social work and makes all sources available for usage. DZI offers an open access library for research, consultation and borrowing.

  • Opening times: Mo – Thurs. 10.00 - 16.00, by appointment Mo and Tues. 16.00 - 18.00 as well as Fri between 10.00 - 12.00
  • Topic related literature lists can be researched upon request.
  • The researched resources can be sent; a shipping and handling fee is required.
  • Send orders in written form to DZI via post, Fax or email.

Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung library is a reference library, however institutions may be offered special arrangements for lending of books and documents.

  • Mo – Thurs. 09.00 - 17.00, Fri 09.00 - 16.00.
  • Times for ordering books to be used in the reading room are as follows: 9.30, 11.00, 13.00, 14.30 & 16.00.
  • The books are available at the information desk approximately 30 minutes later.

The FES offers the following ordering and interlibrary lending services:

  • The library is part of an interlibrary lending system. Materials can be requested from the library closest to you.
  • Brochures and articles from journals, newspapers and collected works, can be ordered as copies or scans; for direct delivery.Up to 30 pages can be ordered for a fee.
  • Electronic full-text of publications by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung are referenced in our digital library and can be viewed and downloaded free of charge.

GESIS

The GESIS-library is a service institution that records, provides and locates specialized information in printed and electronic form. The library is customer-oriented, offering individual support in procuring information from all accessible resources; making it rapidly available.

 

The holdings of the GESIS library comprise approximately 36,500 monographs and 650 journals as well as some special holdings, including GDR gray literature, antique materials of historical statistical publications on Prussia, Bavaria, primary and secondary literature on archived surveys and a large collection of published survey results.

GESIS library locations:

  • Cologne: Literature on methods and results of empirical social research as well as primary and secondary literature on studies archived in the data archive of GESIS.
  • Berlin: Literature on the transformation processes in Eastern Europe and in the New Federal States of Germany /GDR.
  • Bonn: Information science and information-technological literature as well as publications on the equal chances of men and women in science and research in Germany.
  • Mannheim: Literature on methods and techniques of empirical social research, social monitoring and social structure analysis in various social science areas at the national and international level.

Special collection USB Cologne

The University and City Library of Cologne (USB- Cologne), in their special collection library for social science - funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation) - acquires the domestic and foreign literature relevant for the social sciences as completely as possible and makes it available for lending nationwide via its lending system.

  • USB Cologne offers the special collection social sciences funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG); giving users access to more than 1,800 social science journal titles and the approximately 3,500 books from the social sciences acquired yearly.
  • Access to these holdings is available to every user interested in the sciences.
  • The opening hours can be found on the homepage.

USB Cologne offers the following ordering and lending services: 

  • The Cologne Literature Service (Köli-Kölner Literaturdienst):  Using Köli you can order books and copies of articles from the holdings of the University and City Library of Cologne (USB) for a fee.
  • Unable to find what you want in a library close to you? Then use the interlibrary lending system to order what you would like for a small fee. University and City Library of Cologne (USB) guarantees the supply of literature through a nationwide lending system for the special collection of social sciences and economics.

WZB - Social Science Research Center Berlin

The Social Science Research Center Berlin library is a reference library that is also open to visitors.

  • Mo – Fri., 9.00 - 16.00
  • No external lending service
  • Please make an apponitment via phone or email prior to visiting.
