Already before the terror attacks on the USA in 2001, and Madrid in 2004, as well as in London in 2005, terrorism already held a prominent position in the discussion on security policy, above all in Western Europe. The numerous acts of violence in this departing decade as well as actions limited to domestic fronts, for example those of the terror organization Jemaah Islamiyah in Indonesia, as well as the global terror activities of Al-Qaeda, indicate that a differentiated complexity on causes and developments on the topic of terrorism exists, which is only since a few years being examined decidedly subject-specifically and interdisciplinarily by various scientific disciplines.
The December edition of Research Special focuses on the various aspects of international terrorism and the related security policy strategies. The phenomenon of terrorism in a nationalist context with endogenous origins, such as those activities connected to a nationalist-territorial sphere is not taken into consideration here.
Current literature and research references illuminate the social science and interdisciplinary aspects of globalized terrorism and the consequences for the security policy of the international communityt.
