Gender equality Plans (GEPs) have been a policy instrument for institutional change in research organisations encouraged by the EU for over a decade. This event will present and discuss the latest study on the impact of the GEPs across the ERA. Online Event, 15.03.2023

"Gender equality Plans (GEPs) have been a policy instrument for institutional change in research organisations encouraged by the EU for over a decade, since the Commission’s 2012 Communication on the European Research Area (ERA), which was followed up by Council Conclusions on Advancing gender equality in the ERA in December 2015.

After having supported over 200 higher education and research organisations for the implementation of GEPs through FP7 and Horizon 2020, the European Commission decided to accelerate the change by requiring that higher education institutions, research organisations and public bodies from Member States and associated countries have in place a Gender Equality Plan (GEP) as an eligibility criterion for the Horizon Europe research and innovation framework programme 2021-2027.

The new ERA framework proposed by the Commission in 2020, and the ERA Policy Agenda 2022-2024 adopted by the Council in 2021, further reaffirm the need for institutional change, through inclusive gender equality plans and policies opening to intersectionality.

A study was commissioned early 2022 by DG Research and Innovation to examine the impacts that EU and national policies and programmes supporting or imposing Gender Equality Plans (GEPs) in research organisation have actually had on gender equality across the ERA.

This event will present and discuss this study’s key research findings, good practice examples, and policy recommendations.

The full study and its policy briefs will be released on the Publication Office of the European Union at the end of March."
