Morocco is a context in which secularist and Islamist voices seem irreconcilably opposed in political discourse – at the expense of womens and gender rights. This lecture explores the context in which the contestations of women's and gender rights in Morocco should be positioned. Prof. Sadiqi introduces the notion of the 'Center' as a lens through which women's contestations may be understood as agency beyond and across the competitive secularist and Islamist ideologies.
Fatima Sadiqi is Professor of Linguistics and Gender Studies (University of Fez, Morocco); currently she is a Fellow of the ZiF Research Group ‘Global Contestations of Women's and Gender Rights’.
