This presentation delineates gender-specific biases inherent in research on inequalities among older adults with regard to two components of quantitative analyses: the sample definition and the methodological approach. The paper proposes a novel combination of machine learning, sequence analysis, and decomposition techniques, allowing for a new perspective on gender inequalities over the life course. Results show that the largest shares of Gender Pension Gaps are attributable to gender-exclusive life course experiences because of the lack of a male counterpart for female engagement in care work, which is poorly rewarded in pension systems.
Dr. Carla Rowold is a postdoctoral researcher at the Hertie School Berlin. Her research focuses on inequalities across the life course, especially across gender and among older adults, with a particular emphasis on capturing the complexities and multidimensional nature of these experiences.
