A central concept of queer theory and key factor in queer lives, the closet has the potential to cluster recent approaches and concerns in queer studies, and to create a locus for collaboration among different disciplines. In our talk, we approach this key paradigm of queer theory through the lens of embodiment. The closet as a metaphor conceptualizes different ways of (physically) interacting with and being in the world. These manifest in queer people’s bodies, at which we take a closer look to gauge the affective dimension of coming out: What does it mean to be out or to be in the closet? What impact does it have on the body and what does it mean for how queer bodies engage with the world? How is ‘masking’ or ‘passing’ differently embodied? From a sociolinguistic and literary studies perspective respectively, we shed light on some of the body’s intersections with gender and sexuality, and discuss one case study from each field.
