We warmly invite you to a joint academic event: Diversity between Lived Experience and Educational Knowledge. A Double Book Presentation.

In a society that increasingly defines itself as postmigrant, one pressing question remains: Who produces which knowledge about whom — and with what consequences?

This event brings together two critical perspectives on the representation of migration, gender, and diversity — examined from different vantage points:

  • Dr. Matthias Schneider, in “Masculinity and Forced Migration, focuses on the biographical narratives of men who fled from Eritrea. He traces how masculinity is formed and transformed in the context of national service, structural violence, migration, and arrival — highlighting agency and constraint in lived experience.
  • Dr. Daniel Schumann, in his book “Epistemologies of Integration, analyzes civic education textbooks as instruments of official knowledge production. From a sociological perspective, he explores how notions of difference and normality are pedagogically constructed — and what forms of thinking are made (im)possible.

Together, both works reveal how diversity is narrated, taught, and negotiated — in state-approved materials and in embodied biographies. They shed light on how subjectivities and knowledge regimes are co-produced within the entanglements of integration, education, and power.

We are honored that Dr. Yvonne Albrecht (DeZIM/HU Berlin) will join the event as a discussant and respond to both contributions.

Following the discussion, we warmly invite you to a summer gathering in the villa garden with drinks, snacks, and a barbecue — a chance to celebrate the season together. In case of bad weather, the event will take place indoors.
