   The "Chancengleich!" portal at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) is a central, comprehensive source of information about equal opportunity activities at RUB. It presents different levels and aspects of equal opportunity under a number of headings: Equal Opportunity in Focus, Implementing Equal Opportunity, Women in Science, Service and Equal Opportunity Office.

   As well as information about the organisation and structure of equal opportunity activities at the university and key resources such as reports and equal opportunity concepts, there is also practical advice on implementing equal opportunity for students and researchers, at the workplace or with the family and as to what measures are offered in the different areas by the university. There are also 15 personal profiles of women professors. Their different career paths and the professional opportunities in the world of research are intended to both motivate and inspire female students.

2. "Die Humbolde" Daycare Centre  ?

   Description of the measure

   "Die Humbolde" is a daycare centre run by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU Berlin) for the children of students on the Mitte campus, offering an extra childcare option in addition to municipal daycare centres. Up to 15 children aged 1 to nursery school age are looked after by four childcare workers who are themselves students (two women and two men). The daycare centre was set up in 1995 on the initiative of students with children to enable them to attend lectures, language classes, etc., outside normal daycare hours. It is open during class hours, from Monday to Friday, 9am - 8:30pm. Childcare costs are ?5 for one session or ?10 per month plus ?1.50 for dinner or lunch.

   The long opening hours and flexible service enables as many parents as possible to use the facility. The children's project and the daycare centre are administered by the ReferentInnenRat, the student representative body at HU Berlin. The children's project is funded almost exclusively by HU Berlin with small parental contributions.

   Description of the measure

   Since 2006, the Senate Equal Opportunity Commission and the rector's office have awarded the title of "Family-Friendly Institution at the University of Greifswald". This award goes to institutes, departments, research projects, etc. which actively work to help people balance career or studies and family responsibilities, which promote an open, family-friendly atmosphere, and which design concepts to further improve family-friendliness. Staff and students of the university can nominate institutions and rate various aspects of family-friendliness at the institution in question in an anonymous online survey.

   The framework examination regulations introduced in 2015 and 2016 for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees enables students with family responsibilities to receive special support for studying and exams.

   Students who are responsible for caring for a spouse, registered partner, close relative or relative by marriage (parents, parents-in-law, grandparents, siblings) and who are disadvantaged by this are offered appropriate support for studying and exams, by written request.

   Description of the measure

   Support is primarily offered to doctoral researchers, postdoctoral researchers, staff preparing for habilitation and junior professors who are single parents, on parental leave, on partial parental leave or responsible for at least half of the care of their children.

   Applicants may request an allowance of up to ?250 per child for actual travel expenses for conferences or childcare costs if travelling with children and, if applicable, a partner or babysitter to look after the children, or if the conference attendee?s absence results in additional childcare costs at home. Evidence must be provided of the necessity to take the children on the trip.

   For female early career researchers and for male early career researchers who are single parents or on parental leave, who have a leadership role (e.g. postdocs with an independent junior research group, fellows in a Zukunftskolleg or habilitated scholars), special funding is available for research visits (such as scientific retreats, mentorships and cooperation meetings) and international conferences lasting more than one week (at least five working days). With the support of the relevant institution (a copy of the approved funding proposal for the trip), individuals can apply for larger allowances for air fares, rent etc. For trips lasting more than four weeks, allowances are also available for other expenses such as school costs. The amount of the allowance is decided on a case-by-case basis by the Equal Opportunity Council.

9. BWLternzeitmodell: parental leave model  ?

   Objectives of the measure

   The aim of the BWLternzeit model is to improve the balance of family and career and at the same time to give the faculty and professors planning security.

   Description of the measure

   The BWLternzeitmodell parental leave model is based on a faculty-level parental leave pool which allows the faculty to respond flexibly to parental leave taken by research employees while also offering attractive positions to parental leave replacements. When research employees (according to § 28 paragraphs 1 and 2 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (HmbHG)) take parental leave, a position corresponding to the previous employment percentage is created in the parental leave pool. The roles of research employees who take parental leave are transferred here until a suitable research position becomes available from state funding for the previous professorship. The role of supervisor (in a management and academic sense) remains with the professorship.

   Transfer to the parental leave pool frees up capacity at the level of the professorship. The replacement can therefore be offered the same employment percentage and a contract period according to the Code of Conduct ?Prekäre Beschäftigungsverhältnisse in der Wissenschaft? (precarious employment relationships in research), thus avoiding staff shortages for the professorship. Applications must be submitted to make use of the BWLternzeitmodell parental leave model and a maximum of one position for each professorship can be substituted or replaced through the model.
