(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Since the beginning of this year, there has been intensive discussion in Germany about the necessity of elite universities. Most of the representatives from politics, business, media and science demand such universities because, according to their opinion, it is the only way to maintain the scientific and economic capacity of the country or to raise it to the necessary level. The function of elite institutions is also analyzed in part in the opinions. In the centre is only the theory of superior capability. The social function is hardly ever mentioned. But it is determinative. Graduation from these elite institutions grants access to key positions in the society, and simultaneously they provide a distinctive social selection. This scenario applies to all leading industrial countries (other than Germany), where such elite institutions have been in existence for many decades. The author provides an overview about the situation in France, Great Britain and the United States and examines the situation in Japan." (author's abstract)
