Inhalt: "We offer observations about the obstacles to promoting a gender-inclusive labor force based on two sets of data on female Qatari students and professionals. Data set 1 is the result of a project pertaining to the disparity between education and employment among Qatari women. We surveyed 274 young women between the ages of 17 and 25 with the aim of understanding some of the reasons why Qatari women were not entering the workforce. Data set 2 derives from 350 focus groups and interviews with female students to assess the effect their tertiary education had on their marriageability. While education has delayed the age of marriage when this generation of women is compared with that of their mothers and grandmothers, the social expectations of becoming a wife and ensuing motherhood mean that marriage can restrict a woman's working outside the home." Mobility-Related Economic Exclusion: Accessibility and Commuting Patterns in Industrial Zones in Turkey

Inhalt: Geographers have long examined the assumption that women are locally constricted and what this means for women taking up of economic opportunities. These studies have provided valuable insights into the understanding of the spatial dimension of social exclusion. However, the investigation of the role of wider economic, physical and social contexts on women’s mobility and accessibility constraints has mainly concerned the countries in North America and Western Europe. Through a mixed methods study of two industrial zones in Turkey, this article looks at how women and men from different social backgrounds access the zones with the aim of identifying the specific constraints that women face in their everyday life in accessing economic opportunities. The results show that while gender seems to play a role in the choice of place of residence and the employers’ perception of time use, women’s socioeconomic and educational backgrounds seem to be more important predictors of their commuting patterns and access to the zones. The study confirms that gendered daily travel patterns are a useful unit of analysis for investigating unequal access to economic opportunities. It further argues that the complex nature of everyday mobilities of women should be interpreted in conjunction with the perceptions of employers on women’s work spaces and time use.

Titelübersetzung:Adolescents as mediatized couch potatoes? A gender-focused view on the relation of sport and media orientated leisure activities of adolescents

Braumüller, Birgit; Hartmann-Tews, Ilse
Quelle: Diskurs Kindheits- und Jugendforschung / Discourse. Journal of Childhood and Adolescence Research, 12 (2017) 1, S 49-70
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Adolescent environments are strongly influenced by societal change processes; first and foremost the medialization shapes diverse new challenges and developmental tasks for the youth. Media is increasingly competing with major agents for socialization. Particularly new and social media gain influence and contribute to changes in adolescent leisure patterns. This development raises the question, if the medialization displaces sports activities and teenagers therefore become media-fixed couch potatoes that are only virtually interacting instead of being physically active. Against the background of three theses - namely displacement, engagement or independence of sport and media orientated leisure activities - the aim of the research is a quantitative analysis of the mutual interference of sports and the use of the internet and social networking sites. Furthermore gendered patterns concerning the relation of sport and media orientated activities will be examined. The empirical analysis is based on the MediKuS study - a study of cultural-, sport- and media-orientated leisure activities of adolescents - carried out by the German Youth Institute in 2011/2012. To answer the questions the authors refer to the dataset of the 13- to 17-years old adolescents." (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:Is the glass ceiling still there? A study of perceived aspects of corporate culture and gender-specific differences in career prospects
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The issue of gender-specific differences as regards career opportunities is still relevant and a matter for controversial debate. Various studies confirm that, in a European comparison, well-educated women's potential in Germany is still not being fully exploited. The study presented here provides an insight into how women and men perceive corporate cultural aspects such as relationships and networks, employee development, staffing and recruitment as well as the presence of women in the workplace with regard to their career prospects. The study is based on an online survey of (potential) managers in a large German company." (author's abstract)
"Involvierte" Väter zwischen Beruf und Familie: zur Re/Produktion von Männlichkeiten in paarinternen Aushandlungen
Titelübersetzung:Involved fathers between work and family life: re/production of masculinity in negotiations within couples
Autor/in:
Peukert, Almut
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Starting from the hypothesis discussed in research on masculinities and fathering that 'involved' fathering is incompatible with hegemonic masculinity, this paper examines continuity and change in interrelating work and family life by German fathers. Within the sociological frame of interaction theory on un/doing masculinity I focused on the production and presentation of gender differences and the hierarchizing demarcation against femininity and non-hegemonic masculinities within the couple. Based on 27 qualitative couples' and individual interviews, three forms of re/production of masculinity were constructed and discussed along the dimensions of vocational/career concepts, financial care of the family, and parental leave arrangements within the couple. The results show that the re/production of masculinities within negotiations of the couples regarding paid and family work are fragile, challenged, or episodically undone. This implies that in addition to welfare state policies and work organizations, the negotiations within the couple about their division of paid and unpaid work have significant consequences for the un/equality between the parents." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The social understanding of fatherhood is currently changing. This transition becomes visible not only in cultural concepts of 'active' fatherhood but also in new policies and an increasing number of work organizations that address fathers in their offers to reconcile family and a career. In real life, though, employees are still expected to be constantly available and to consent to career norms that reproduce hegemonic masculinities. This is a strong indicator of organizational norms that limit fathers' capabilities to get involved in the family. In our paper, we argue that hidden rules in organizational culture may counteract official organizational policies of family friendliness. We ask how organizational contexts influence fathers' sense of entitlement and to what extend these factors are gendered. In our argumentation, we refer to case studies of seven work organizations of different economic sectors." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article resumes qualitative and quantiative results of research on the situation of young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and queer people. After their coming-out many of them experience exclusion, discrimination and violence. This leads to negative effects on their mental and physical health. At the end a participatory orientation in research is proposed and its benefits are discussed." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article discusses prejudices, stereotypes and discrimination from different perspectives: the theoretical introduction from a sociological perspective frames the socialisational practices of actors within the binary order of gender and desire and highlights selected feminist and queer criticisms. Subsequently, a psychological perspective is applied that proposes the heuristic value of the concept of ambiguity tolerance when analyzing the individual handling of ambiguous situations. Finally, the article employs an empirical perspective that reflects the situation of lgbt* adolescents and young adults. By drawing on data from focus group discussions three common assumptions of unambiguousness were identified. In a concluding outlook the article argues for an interdisciplinary approach of all angles to improve the integration of diversity in the future." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In relationships in which a couple are planning to start a family the norm applied is that the two should share the desire to have a child before the woman gets pregnant. If partners disagree about wanting to have children or if the pregnancy is unplanned, their hand is forced. The disagreement needs to be resolved in one way or another in line with this norm. Based on qualitative interviews conducted with couples who had became parents within the last year, we present three strategies used to achieve the goal of having a child together: (1) constant pressure to have a child, (2) the exchange of lines of argumentation, and (3) manipulation. Here issues of power become relevant as do knowledge of gender and gendered bodies and doing gender processes. These correspond to ways of dealing with disagreement and a culture of problem-solving. In the following we analyze the interaction between strategies, gender and power." (author's abstract)
