Inhalt: "The article offers a macro-sociological view on the evolution of postnational conflicts. It starts with a discussion of the concept of the political, developed by postmodern theorists like Lefort and Laclau, and argues that this concept could help us to understand both the changes within world society and the role new conflicts play within these changes. The concept of the political describes how societies symbolise their identity. The classical concept here is the nation state and the territorial construction of political community. The dismantling of world society's political system is associated with the erosion of this nation state based model of the political. Two consequences could be drawn from here: First, the evolution of world society goes along with a pluralisation of models of the political, e.g. a global, a national and a sub national one. And second, world society today is characterized by conflicts between these concepts of the political." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)

Global gender goals and the construction of equality: conceptual dilemmas and policy practice
Autor/in:
Colclough, Christopher
Quelle: University of Cambridge, Faculty of Education, Research Consortium on Educational Outcomes and Poverty (RECOUP); Cambridge (RECOUP Working Papers, 2), 2007. 20 S
Inhalt: The achievement of gender equality in education, and of women's empowerment more generally, have recently become established amongst the highest international priorities for policy action. This paper examines the processes by which they came to be included amongst the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It argues that the revised targets to 2015 are more practicable than earlier goals. However, it shows that rates of progress will need to be improved, and that financial support from the north is still running at less than half the required levels. Goal achievement presupposes some agreed understanding of the meaning of gender equality. The paper reveals important contradictions between the language of analysis and the vocabulary of policy. Finally, it examines some of the instruments available for monitoring progress and building pressure for policy reform. It shows that failures to meet policy undertakings are as evident – and as serious in their implications for the possibility of achieving the MDGs – amongst aid donors as they are amongst developing-country governments themselves.

So entstehen differenzierte Zeitzeugnisse. Inhalt: At the heart of Stripping, Sex, and Popular Culture lies a very personal story, of author Catherine Roach's response to the decision of her life-long best friend to become an exotic dancer. Catherine and Marie grew up together in Canada and moved to the USA to enroll in PhD programs at prestigious universities. For various reasons, Marie left her program and instead chose to work as a stripper. The author, at first troubled and yet fascinated by her friend's decision, follows Marie's journey into the world of stripping as an observer and analyst. She finds that this world raises complex questions about gender, sexuality, fantasy, feminism, and even spirituality. Moving from first hand interviews with dancers and others, the book broadens into a provocative and accessible examination of the current popularity of "striptease culture," with sex-saturated media imagery, thongs gone mainstream, and stripper aerobics at your local gym. Stripping, Sex, and Popular Culture scrutinizes the naked truth of a lucrative industry whose norms are increasingly at the center of contemporary society.
Titelübersetzung:The female side of violence: young female Russian in the street culture
Autor/in:
Zdun, Steffen
Quelle: Soziale Probleme, 18 (2007) 1, S 42-65
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'This paper addresses on the role of young Russian-German women in the milieu of the street culture. Based on the results of the Ph.D. thesis 'Processes, functions and prevention of violence. A sociological analysis of the behaviour of Russian-German cliques' and on further data findings about the conflict attitudes and behaviour of the women are presented. The author shows that they are expected to act passive in conflicts, that they occur in certain ways as victims and as offenders of violence and that their role as a mother gives them an important influence on keeping the rules of the street culture alive. Thus, prevention is needed that addresses on these problems, especially, because there are signs that the street culture may spread in our society. On one hand, we have to care about the existing structures of that milieu; on the other hand, we have to deal with recent developments of our society that may increase violence - even of women.' Effects of Gender and Age on Retrospective Time Judgements
Autor/in:
Brañas-Garza, Pablo; Espinosa-Fernández, Lourdes; Serrano-del-Rosal, Rafael
Quelle: Time & Society, 16 (2007) 1, S 99-118
Inhalt: This study provides additional empirical evidence for research concerning the effects of gender and age on retrospective time judgements using data obtained from a Spanish database with more than 40,000 individual observations on time estimations. Statistical analyses were performed using the Levene F-test and the t-test of variances and means, respectively. The most important results of the study are as follows: (a) differences in time estimation in relation to gender largely depend on the age groups analysed, with greater differences observed in the younger age group; and (b) although there are some differences regarding age, they are related to certain age groups, particularly the youngest age group.
Postfeminist media culture: elements of a sensibility
Autor/in:
Gill, Rosalind
Quelle: European Journal of Cultural Studies, 10 (2007) 2, S 147-166
Inhalt: "The notion of postfeminism has become one of the most important in the lexicon of feminist cultural an alysis. Yet there is little agreement about what postfeminism is. This article argues that postfeminism is best understood as a distinctive sensibility, made up of a number of interrelated themes. These include the notion that femininity is a bodily property; the shift from objectification to subjectification; an emphasis upon self-surveillance, monitoring and self-discipline; a focus on individualism, choice and empowerment; the dominance of a makeover paradigm; and a resurgence of ideas about natural sexual difference. Each of these is explored in some detail, with examples from contemporary Anglo-American media. It is precisely the patterned articulation of these ideas that constitutes a postfeminist sensibility. The article concludes with a discussion of the connection between this sensibility and contemporary neoliberalism." [author's abstract]
